Woman with Sunglasses

This sunglasses illustration painting was digitally painted with Corel Painter Essentials 5 software program.

Corel Painter allows you to create digital illustrations like this one utilizing the “airbrush tool” and adding a “coarse spray jitter” effect.

Tools of the Trade

  • Corel Painter Essentials 5
  • A computer mouse
  • Wacom Bamboo graphics tablet

The illustration style template is one of the most funnest styles to use, in my opinion, because you can use different color combinations in your painting.

To start find a bright colored image with one main object in the center. To the right side of the screen you will find a menu bar called the PHOTO PAINTING MENU (see image above).

To upload your image to Corel Painter, click on the BROWSE BUTTON and search for your photo to open it.

Now that you have your image uploaded, go to the “auto-paint” feature and press on the drop-down box to see all the style templates.

If this is your first time creating a drawing in Corel Painter, take some time to experiment with each pre-style template.

Choose the ILLUSTRATION style template, then go to the bottom and press the TRIANGULAR START BUTTON to begin the process.

Now you can sit back and watch how Corel Painter makes your drawing come to life.

The second part of the process is simply adding the final touches and also fixing any issues within the drawing.

To inspect your drawing you can scroll forward or backward with you computer mouse to enlarge your image.

Go to the left side of the screen to the PHOTO PAINTING BRUSHES to get familiar with all the art brushes (see image above).

Each brush has the option of adding special effects to your painting located on the right side of the brush menu.

For this illustration I chose the AIRBRUSH tool along with the COARSE SPRAY JITTER effect to add a jittery or bubbly effect on the background.

I used the SOFT AIRBRUSH effect to smooth out some white reflection spots on the woman's body (see video above).

I increased the reflection on the woman's sunglasses using the same soft airbrush effect.

You can always switch to different types of brush effects while your using the airbrush tool.

Tips and Suggestions

The final outcome of your illustration painting really depends on how much detail you want to add.

Adding or reducing the opacity level of your airbrush can make your drawing look more natural just like a real photograph.

Press gently on your graphics tablet if you want a softer airbrush stroke or give it a push to make the color effect darker.

You can add more detailed strokes to your image by increasing the size of the drawing and working on individual parts.
